Something special For Everyone On Your Nice List

A Woman’s Best Friend (Dogs, not Diamonds)

If you know anything about me, you know that I absolutely love animals. What you may not know is how that love borderlines on obsession when it comes to dogs. Seriously, it’s stupid. Half the time I can hardly contain myself around them, and my heart utterly explodes every time I even glance at my two puppies. We typically hear that “diamonds are a girl’s best friend” (thanks Marilyn), but while sparkling jewels are great, I am here to tell the world that nothing beats the unconditional companionship of a dog.

A Silent Love

We humans hardly deserve the unspoken and unconditional love of a dog. In a society where relationships are often fueled by the words exchanged, being able to rely on the devotion of a silent companion is one of the most beautiful things I have experienced in this world. Without a word, we know that we are the center of their universe. In the absence of conversation, we know we have their faith and trust. Seriously, how did we get so lucky?!

A Healing Helper

There is plenty of science-backed research about how dogs can positively affect our lives, from lowering blood pressure to reducing levels of cortisol. While the physical benefits are aplenty, it’s the emotional benefits that have always captivated me. The comfort in their presence offers an incredible sense of solace. Our dogs have a keen knack for always knowing exactly what their owners need, picking up on the subtlest of clues as to how we are feeling.

My Little Life Saver

My little Marley is my angel dog. He helped save my life when I simply couldn’t find a way to on my own. Curled in a tiny ball on my lap. Tucked by my side. Draped across my chest. With a million wordless acts, he has saved me. Grounding me and forcing me to feel alive.

In the deepest, darkest days of my depression, Marley was there. Even when that darkness completely encompassed me, creating an impenetrable barrier between my brain and the world around me, Marley was there. And when life seemed too great a burden to bear, Marley was there. He would stare up at me, reminding me that his basic needs could break me from the mental fog. A walk. A meal. A treat. A snuggle. His expectations were minimal and attainable, but held me accountable for the little creature that has been with me through it all.

For that and so much more, my gratitude is eternal and my awe is unmatched.

A True Companion

The bond we have with our tail-wagging companions help us live happier and healthier lives. For all the reasons that I have already written, but also for the pure joy they provide. A BFF on four legs who doesn’t (vocally) judge, question or criticize but has an immense capacity for making us smile. Dogs are the forever friends we all need in life and they deserve the very best from us.

Growing up with dogs has paved the way for my heart to be so open to their love. So much so that I could not even imagine my home without the click-clack sound of puppy paws pattering throughout it. You know the sound I’m talking about. *heart melts*
