Penny Thoughts: Are we ever really grown up?

Isn’t it interesting, the concept of being grown up? Seconds, minutes, days and weeks pass by and we move towards this inevitable future where we have finally become who we are meant to be. We move through life and grow both physically and emotionally, and at some point we are expected to let go of our childhood dreams and fantasies to make room for adulthood. My thought: f*ck that! Why should we loose touch with that inner child? Should we not make room for her and her fantasies in our adult hearts and bring her dreams with us as we grow up?

As life has gone on, I have gotten older, stronger and more independent. Very adult of me, right? But yet the older I get, the more I have started to see my younger self in me. I’ve evolved and I’ve grown up. And there she still is.

I see her when I play dress up and run along empty country roads on a rainy day in Ireland. I see her when I look an animal in the eyes and wonder where their thoughts are taking them. I see her when I literally can’t resist jumping in a rain puddle and crunching a fallen Autumn leaf. Most importantly, I see her when my mind wanders to faraway places and I see her when I dream.

You see, I have always been a dreamer, constantly getting lost in some fantastical world where anything I can think of is possible. Those little worlds that I still dream up today. I’d like to think that I have those dreams and fantasies to thank for a lot of my life’s most fortunate moments. Why? Because how do we ever achieve anything worthwhile without a dream? Just a thought. A penny thought.

Am I grown up? Technically, yes, but I’ve got Peter Pan tattooed on my hand for a reason. It’s my reminder that who we were when we were little never really leaves us. My reminder to never really grow up and keep striving to live out my childhood dreams. And obviously, I am still not finished playing dress up.
