How to DIY an Autumn Leaf Bunting for Thanksgiving

One of the things I love most about Autumn is the magical hues the season brings. Every year, as I watch fall come to life around me with the changing colors of the leaves, I often think about how I can bring those beautiful warm colors into my home. This DIY autumn leaf bunting is the perfect kid-friendly craft project for you to complete this Thanksgiving. Gather up your favorite fallen leaves and join me in decorating with nature this year.

INSTRUCTIONS

Follow the step-by-step instructions below to learn how to create an autumn leaf bunting of your own.

Step No. 1: Prepare your leaves. Collect fallen leaves from around your neighborhood and press them in a large book until they are dry and flat. No leaves in your yard? No problem! You can also purchase a set of dried leaves.

Step No. 2: Cut your wax paper into folded triangle shapes. Feel free to freehand the shapes, but if you’re a perfectionist like me, create a cardstock template so your shapes will be uniform. Cut as many triangles as you need for the length of bunting you are hoping to create. Cut a length of twine to match.

Step No. 3: Arrange your autumn leaves on the bottom inside of a wax paper triangle. Place the twine at the top of the fold, then fold the top of the triangle over the twine and leaves.

Step No. 4: Place a kitchen towel under and over the triangle and iron the wax paper “leaf sandwich” you created. Iron on high to melt the wax and fuse everything together.

Step No. 5: Repeat steps 2-3, spacing  your wax paper folded triangles evenly to fill your length of twine. Once all your leaves are perfectly pressed between wax paper, hang your full autumn leaf bunting in your home.

Voila! Your autumn leaf bunting is complete and you can now bring the beauty of fall into your home. Hang it on the wall, across a book shelf, over your dining table, or in a window (my personal favorite!) and enjoy the cozy, festive touch it brings to your Thanksgiving celebrations.
