I used to go all-in on my Halloween decor, skip right over Thanksgiving, and go straight to decorating for Christmas. It wasn’t until I hosted my first Friendsgiving that I realized I needed to embrace fall decor a bit more. With the two autumn holidays being seemingly back-to-back, I tried my best to coordinate a fall decorating routine that transitioned easily between Halloween and Thanksgiving. Doing so has been a huge time (and money) saver, and I now get to enjoy the vibes of both holidays. Read through my advice so you can streamline your fall decor, too!
Stick To Neutral Colors
When decorating for the season, focus on a base of neutral colors like creams, browns and blacks, then add in subtle pops of autumnal colors. The color pops of orange and mustard will make your decor feel like fall, but the foundation of neutrals will keep it from being too overwhelming. The creams, browns and blacks can easily be accented to accommodate both Halloween and Thanksgiving. No need to completely redecorate. Utilizing a base of neutral fall decor is the best way to save money.
I love using my tall, black candlesticks to decorate for fall because I can quickly swap out the taper candles from black to yellow after Halloween passes. My long, copper-colored cheesecloth table runner is perfect for the entire season. I also incorporate a bunch of amber glass elements (like candle holders and pumpkins) in my fall decor. The rich brown tones just scream fall to me but fit easily with the added decorations for both holidays.
Use Organic Materials
I have a lot of dried florals and grasses sprinkled throughout my home that I use as elements of my fall decor. The natural colors perfectly accent the neutral color palette I just told you about and add a ton of lovely texture. If you are looking to spice up your dried floral arrangements, add to them! You can easily add some black bat branch sprays for Halloween or acorn stems for Thanksgiving. It’s a quick touch that easily accomplishes the transition of holiday vibes. Real pumpkins also add a beautiful touch to table decor.
Add Holiday-Specific Accents
Piggy-backing off of that last bit of advice, adding small holiday-specific accents will take your fall decor to the next level. For October, I add in a variety of small skulls and bats to emphasize the spookiness of Halloween that I love. Then in November I amplify the pops of orange and add in acorns and little turkey tealight candle holders.
Another one of my favorite festive features is to stock my bar cabinet with cocktail napkins for each holiday. When the holiday passes, I throw any that are left into a Ziploc bag and save them for next year. The small paper napkins are useful and inexpensive, making them a reasonable item to purchase to add a holiday pop. Plus, who doesn’t want to place their seasonal libation on a napkin that reads “I’m here for the boos!”?
Create A Pumpkin Paradise
When planning out your fall decor, there is no such thing as too many pumpkins. Nowadays, you can find pumpkins of all different kinds: glass, ceramic, burlap, velvet, paper mache, rattan, wood, and more. You name the material, and I am sure there is a pumpkin made out of it. I love to mix in decorative pumpkins with real pumpkins for a variety of textures. Stick to orange and the neutral colors we talked about earlier for your pumpkins so you can keep them out for the full season. When in doubt, pumpkin it out!
I have found that I absolutely love decorating my home for each holiday or season, and there is something incredibly special about the warm coziness of fall decor.
